Within a few years, a driver who pulls up to the gas pump may pay two bills with a single swipe of the credit card: one for the gas and the other for each mile driven since the last fill-up.
That may be the result of what many transportation experts see as an inevitable revolution in the way Americans pay for their highways.

Homeowners in car-dependent areas without access to alternative transportation are at greater risk of foreclosure, according to a report released yesterday by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) that calls for mortgage underwriting standards to begin taking so-called "location-efficiency" into account.

Clean Energy Business Zones: A tool for economic growth

Whether it was steel, the railroad, the automobile, or the Internet, America’s leadership in technological innovation has made it the world’s economic power for the last 100 years. Today, we’re on the brink of the next revolution with the transition to clean energy. Of course, new technologies inevitably push old ones aside—personal computers, for example, killed typewriter industry in the 1980s.
The transition to clean energy will inevitably have the same effect. While many communities will immediately prosper from new solar and wind plants or advanced battery production, others will initially lose jobs and even businesses or industries. Yet these same communities that might suffer during the transition, particularly those in the industrial Northeast and Midwest and rural South and Plains, could capitalize on clean energy. They just don’t have access to the economic tools to do it on their own. That is why Third Way worked with Rep. Dan Maffei (D-N.Y.) to develop Clean Energy Business Zones (CBiZ).

It's Possible to Live Without a Car

If someone took your car away today, how would your life change? You're about to meet a woman who gave up her car, moved to Downtown Dallas, and completely changed her daily routine. She proves that it may not be as hard as you think.
Wendy Loven's boots are getting a lot of use these days. That's because two years ago, the Euless resident decided to give up her suburban lifestyle to fulfill a life-long dream.
"It's always been a dream of mine to live downtown ever since I was a little girl," she said.
Now that she's living downtown, she decided to take the life-changing decision a step further by giving up her car.

Why the problem of fixing our buildings is so vague—and what we can do about it
We’re hardwired to address the smaller problems that we can see, rather than the big ones that we can’t imagine. There’s no better—or more important—example of that problem than the current debate over energy use.
I’d wager that if you polled even well-informed citizens, they’d rank fuel efficiency as the number one problem we face, in trying to reduce carbon emissions. And I’d bet that, if in this very column you’re reading, I went on to talk about all the ways cars are destructive to the environment, not a single person would respond: But how important is that, really?
But the plain fact, as Mother Jones points out, is that buildings, in the electricity they use to run and the materials they require to build, are responsible for nearly half of our nation’s carbon footprint. Transportation? Twenty-seven percent. So it’s safe to say that while transportation is crucial, we can’t solve our carbon problem if we fail to address the energy we use in our buildings.
And yet the fuel efficiency of cars dominates headlines and op-eds, while discussions of carbon-neutral electricity—when they happen—treat it more like something that’s nice to have rather than the single biggest problem at hand. Why is that? ....
